چکیده

This paper examines the global effects of droughts on economic activity and the influence of local and upstream large dams on this relationship. We use spatially-specific data on drought severity and nighttime lights data as a measure of economic activity. The analysis shows that severe and extreme droughts reduce local economic activity. In preliminary analyses, local dams appear to improve the ability of an area to withstand droughts in least squares equations; however, with instrumental variables to address endogeneity in dam placement, dams appear to worsen the impacts of droughts. Upstream dams also appear to increase the sensitivity of a region’s economic activity to local drought.

China's transboundary waters: new paradigms for water and ecological security through applied ecology

China is Asia's most important upstream riparian country, sharing 110 rivers and lakes with 18 downstream countries. Consequently, China's management of transboundary water resources must consider both environmental and geopolitical risks. The major threats to and conflicts over international rivers in China revolve around biotic homogenisation due to the installation of transport links, water a...

This paper presents the results of an evaluation of the effects of a local water harvesting project in Kenya concerning the construction of small scale sand dams by communities. Sand dams are small structures built in ephemeral rivers to store excess water to overcome periods of drought. For this evaluation we developed a method using socio-economic vulnerability indicators, which are linked to...

COMPARISON ABILITY OF GA AND DP METHODS FOR OPTIMIZATION OF RELEASED WATER FROM RESERVOIR DAM BASED ON PRODUCED DIFFERENT SCENARIOS BY MARKOV CHAIN METHOD

Planning for supply water demands (drinkable and irrigation water demands) is a necessary problem. For this purpose, three subjects must be considered (optimization of water supply systems such as volume of reservoir dams, optimization of released water from reservoir and prediction of next droughts). For optimization of volume of reservoir dams, yield model is applied. Reliability of yield mod...

The Effect of Dams of Sire Path Management on Genetic and Economic Parameters in a Simulated Genomic Selection Program

A deterministic model based on the gene flow method, considering the features of Iranian Holstein cattle population, was implemented in this study to evaluate the effect of altering the number of age-classes in the dams of future sire (DS) path and the number of dams required for breeding a young bull (YB), to be evaluated as future sire, on genetic gain and resultant economic efficiency of a g...

Small farm dams: impact on river flows and sustainability in a context of climate change

The repetition of droughts in France has led to a growing demand for irrigation water and consequently to an increase in requests for the construction of small farm dams. Although such dams are small, their accumulation in a basin affects river flows, because the water collected in these small farm dams is used for irrigation and thus does not contribute to river flow. In order to gain more ins...
